Set all lights to become sound active through program?

Post by cembry25 »

Is there a way to set all the lights to become sound active? Just wondering since I have a gig and i want to use a certain live shows for one part of the event.

Thanks.

It depends on your lights. There are some fixtures that will let you set them to "Sound-active mode" via DMX but many won't. There is no way of making the controller work as a sound activated controller.

Oh okay, bummer, but that's okay. I have another question..

I'll just post here so it isn't individual posts.. but I read about fading in between scenes where you make two scenes..

Scene 1: Fade in
Step 1 - Fade in
Step 2 - Maintain level

Scene 2: Fade out
Step 1 - Fade out
Step 2 - Maintain level

I tried this, and haven't got success. Is there something I'm missing? I am just trying to do a color change with fade.

One way I tried is..

Step 1 - Fade in
Step 2 - Maintain level
Step 3 - Fade out

and this is for each individual color. I'll appreciate any tips that will help me program this easier :D Thanks.

Hey cembry, hey tomrbland!
When you do multiple step scenes the program wants to run the steps sequentially and at the end it will loop around and start over again.
In Live you can designate the button from the right click menu to be "No Loop". However that means that when it gets to the end of the steps the button releases and you scene is no longer maintained.
I solved this problem by using the "No Loop" button but I add a final step to any scene (look) I wish to maintain to an absurdly long time such as 10:00.00. You can use whatever time that makes sense to your particular usage but to put your example in perspective with my solution it would look like this:
Scene 1: Fade in
Step 1 - Fade in @ say a 2sec fade up so 00:02.00
Step 2 - Maintain level @ 10:00.00
In Live make the scene a "No Loop" button and it would take 2 seconds to fade to the desired level in step 1. And in Step 2 it would maintain that level for 10:00.00 before it would shut off or you de-select it for another button selection. If your Live page is Solo Buttons, it would hold for 10:00.00 or until you select another button, whichever comes first.
I hope that helps!
The same would hold true for your decay scene.

Thanks for the information Pink LD.

Just to clear this up since I'm a bit lost, and I'm not at home to try this yet.

So for that scene would it be an individual color, and would this be automatic? Maybe when I try this in person I'd understand more. Sorry I'm really new to this =[

I don't quite understand your follow up question.
What type of fixture is this? A conventional, colour changer? RGB mixer? Dimmier on a moving head/mirror?

P.S Don't get discouraged I actually played with the software for a good six months before I took it out to a show. It takes some time to wrap your head around what the software can and can't do. And that is largely based on your experience with doing lighting.
Some folks have a basic club rig and are looking to put together a simple show with some trick eye candy features.
Others, like me, build theatrical stacks of hundreds of scenes for multiple universes. I am often looking to figure out how to make the software do what I want while I know how I would do it on a HOG, AVO or Zero-88 console.

The lights I'm using is Blizzard Pucks. I suppose it falls under RGB.

Just the main thing I'm trying to do is give uplighting in a room with/without it blacking out the room. So far I've just came up with it fading in and out, but I don't know if it seems like the more appropriate way to do it.

In one of my post I did..

Example:

Scene 1 = Blue
Step 1 - Fade in
Step 2 - Maintain color
Step 3 - Fade out

and this is just for one individual color, my question is.. is there a better way to do this, I'm not quite sure how the way you told me works(i guess i need a bit of a dumb down explanation -_-)

I'm not completely sure how the button page really works, I just went by the tutorial in the manual, so I know very basic.

Well.. just the most important thing i need to do is color changing for like every 10 minutes. I'd just use the standalone for the lights itself but there is certain colors that they didn't want for this event.

cembry,

Have you played with the demo show? It gives examples of allsorts of things.

I can't quite work out what you are trying to achieve. Are you trying to achieve a single colour wash or a colour chase?

The only thing I can suggest for now is for you to try this:

New scene,
Select a colour,
At the bottom of each colour channel there is a black line (probably set to look like a square wave) click this until you get a ramp shaped line. (You only need one step - you don't need one for the fade in or the fade out)
Then press save.

Repeat this with another colour.

Open the program "live"
Right click where it says page 1
Add light scene
Add both light scenes that you just made.

Now when you click on the first light scene it should fade up that colour,
Then click the 2nd light scene (don't un-select the first one) and it will fade in to that colour.

Did that make anything clearer?

Sorry for not being clear, I'm pretty new to the lighting scene (my main job is being the DJ, but I got into the process of dmx lighting because of experience, and is really fun to mess around with!)

I haven't played with the demo show since I just wanted to go straight to programing lights.

The main thing I'm trying to achieve is basically just room coloring, I don't know the correct term for this being, but basically like.. give the room the color blue, then switches to purple after awhile. I'm guessing it's single color wash? I mean I got the single color wash down, but transition to like blue to purple, I want it to transition smoothly to the next color, not slowly blacking out, then purple fades.

but it sounds like the steps you posted is probably the thing I am looking for.

I'll post results and let you know if it is. Sorry for being hard to understand, but I am terribly new at this! Again, ty for helping, appreciate it so much!

I recommend playing with the demo show for an hour or 2. It's worth getting to grips with the software before diving in :)
