Midi Sliders that Function in Editor

Is there a way to tie MIDI sliders to channels in the editor. I have assigned several channels on my APC mini to control the colors, gobo, prism rotation, and focus of one of my moving heads. I did this with the hope of helping my workflow during scene creation. It is much easier to control DMX values for something like focus or speed of rotation with a physical slider. The problem is that when I attempt to program a scene in steps or generator the sliders effect the light, but not the programming parameters. So, I can adjust the focus with the midi slider on my APC Midi, but this change in focus is not reflected in the generator focus channel. Is there something I should be doing differently?
