V8 - Can't load generator file into Steps

In V8 I am unable to load generator files into step to edit. I understand that in V8 you can play generator files straight from live. My question would be, how do I edit the generator manually? Previously I would make a 4 point tight oval for a scene I would label Xpan or if it was vertical Ytilt. I would then load the generator file into steps and for my X pan I would deactivate the Y and visa versa for the Y tilt. This would allow me to go into those movement no matter what my position scene was. creating a multitude of movements from the one button. Is there a way for me to do this in V8?
