fixture option greyed out [fixed]

clearly I'm missing a step - both in the mac and pc version - after setting up a simple scene with my lights - I'd like to see them in the 3D window. I can import all kinds of objects and room changes but I don't see my fixtures because I can't access the pulldown option (button) I right click everything is available except the fixture setting - what do I do?
