Novation Launchpad S

Postby MTF Showtechnic » 18 January 2015, 14:14

Hi guys,
does anybody have any experience with the Launchpad S (LP-S), especially how to light or extinguish the Led's?
As I can see in the "Programmer’s Reference Manual" there must be a "Note On" / "Note Off" Information for the Led's.
Also in the Manual: "A note-on message of maximum velocity is delivered when the button is pressed, and a message of velocity zero when released"
But I don't undertand how the Led's will light up by first tap on a button (LP-S) and go off by second tap, because first tap will send Note ON and releasing the button will send Note Off. Second Tap will do the same. So Led's will stay only momentary??!
Am I wrong?
Haven't got a Launchpad yet, because I'm not sure if it will work as I want it to be working.
Please write if you have any experience with it.
Problem is that there's no useful Midi Controller for Lighting Software out there.
First of all I selected an APC Mini cause it's the most suitable controller for Sweetlight. Lot of buttons and 8 Faders for Submasters.
I wrote to Akai but they don't want to release the Midi Mapping for the Led's.
Please give me Input (only LP-S)
greetings

I'm using a Launchpad mini...,works just fine w version 7
Midi note on/off is sent as a toggle on/ off not a momentary on/off
Buttons light up and stay on unless the button is a flash button which makes it momentary at that point...

Hi Earl,
thanks for this answer. Can you tell me the size of the button's (Grid) and the round ones.
I've to decide if these are large enough for my fingers.
And some more questions:
Have you switched to the Led Power Mode, respectivily is this with the Mini possible?
Which colour is used? (Colour change is unfortunately the non adjustable Velocity Byte in Sweetlight)
How strong do you have to push the button's?
Do they sometimes trigger double?
BTW: Today I've called a big Music Store and asked the following:
Q: What kind of Midi Notes will be sent? - A: I think it's a CC Byte
Q: Isn't it Note On/Off cause that's written in the programmer's reference? A: Yes that may be possible too.
Q: What kind of message has to be send to the Mini to light the Led's? A: The Led's will always shine white
Magnificant informations.
Every client who wants to buy knows still less than before a call.

The Round buttons are 1/4" The Squares are 3/4"

Launch Pad transmits MIDI note messages On/Off, CC messages are primarily used for Slider/Faders

Button color is tricky because SX only transmits 1 MIDI message...
If you want another color besides white... a work around is to create a "Dummy" page w/ buttons that can "mask" the original message to transmit the second part of the MIDI message needed to "color" the button...
I accidentally discovered this when having the same button assigned to two different MIDI triggers on two different buttons one was a note on/off the other was a slider 8-)

Here's a manual for the Launchpad that may give some insight... Note: Novation may have changed some things for the later models of the Launchpad...

Yeah I've noticed this. A year ago I've build my own Midi Transmitter sending Program Byte.
I used it with Sweetlight in a theatre to start 1 button after each other. (scene by scene)
It worked well. Take a look at my little toy!
But now we've a Midi Out
I'm just programming a mikrocontroller to receive those signals and.... it's working.
Now I can see the received Bytes from Sweetlight and light up different Led's.

Choosing the Data2/Velocity for the Midi-Out message will be possible in next fix/release

Special thanks to this marvelous support for the very quick realization to adjust Data2.
Today my Launchpad Mini has arrived.
Due to the fact that Velocity is adjustable now, it's no problem to choose the colour of the desired LED. 8-)
Thanks again
