LED Tape Control

Postby chadpressley » 01 August 2016, 19:46

I have purchased several rolls of RGB SMD5050 tape for installation. I was wondering what specifications are required for dmx decoders to work on a dmx 512 plus?

Our interfaces send a dmx 512 signal which is dmx512 compliant (http://old.usitt.org/DMX512.aspx).
Any dmx fixture is supposed to work with our interfaces.

If not, please double check with another dmx fixture
If still not working, please return the interface to your supplier for maintenance services.

This is a topic for a 30 channel led tape strip controller. Was very cool to work with but we are having issues with 512 box on MAC. Not for sure yet if it works on PC. The Xfactor box works great with it( which is only PC available).

Good luck. Those lights are great to add to any set design.

LED Tape Control

I currently have the dmx 512plus. Is there any reason why the Xfactor works but the 512plus does not? I would hate to have to use a controller that is no longer supported. Do you know of any decoders that have been proven to work with the 512plus?

unfortunately I personally only have the xfactor, but I use the 512 at my church. I am trying to remember to borrow another guy's 512 (that we discovered the 30 channel dmx doesn't work with, he has a MAC) and see if its a MAC issue and not a PC issue. I will get back to you as soon as I can test it out.

There are several different types of led tape controllers online. I go to Ebay and see whats out there. Everything I've used has been spot on.

Just a word of advice if you haven't dealt with the LED strips before. They are very fragile while mounting. If you nick the back or the sides, you very well might have nicked the PCB board and messed up the colors, trust me, I had to cut and solder many times. Like I said, though, its very cool for effects and the 5050s are bright.

After testing I dont think its a MAC issue.

Can you try with some other fixtures? Maybe ask a nearby event service?

I have emailed a lot of vendors to ask what their interframe rate is on their decoders. A few have said that they do not accept 2 ms interframe rate. Unfortunately most tell me that they don't know and I would have to adjust my PC controller or buy one to test it.

Apparently you want to avoid the Chinese decoders. I just bought these and they passed the first round of testing. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q1N1N ... ref=plSrch
